    Conjugated carbonyl more stable, not reduced as easily.
































    (Maybe?)

    Or enzyme specific for pentose and not hexose? (Dif ring sizes)

    Ya, but it doesn't twist into conjugation with heat, nucleophilic hydride source, acid, or other metals. The only thing I know of that will shift delta-5 steroids to delta-4 steroids, provided the 3-position is an alcohol, is the Oppenauer oxidation which simultaneously shifts the olefin and oxidizes the alcohol.
    Did some digging, apparently that synthesis with the Milan flocculent is legit; I'm still surprised as to what step discreetly causes the isomerization though.
